Gallipoli, Puglia By Car – Romantic Stop On A Puglia Road Trip
Gallipoli was the only town on our Puglia road trip that somehow stayed in my drafts for far too long. And honestly, that’s unfair – because if you’re traveling through Gallipoli Puglia, especially by car, this town deserves a special place on your itinerary.
Located on the Ionian coast, Gallipoli Puglia is not just another seaside destination. It’s atmospheric, romantic, slightly chaotic (in a very Italian way) and incredibly alive – especially in the evening, when the stone walls glow golden and the sea reflects the sunset like a mirror.
This is a town you don’t just visit. You feel it.

Is Gallipoli Puglia worth visiting?
Yes, Gallipoli Puglia is absolutely worth visiting. It’s one of the most romantic towns in southern Italy, known for its historic old town, beautiful beaches and unforgettable sunsets over the Ionian Sea.
Absolutely yes. In fact, if I had to name the most romantic stop on a Puglia road trip, Gallipoli would be my pick.
There’s something about the contrast here: ancient stone walls surrounded by turquoise sea, narrow streets opening suddenly to wide sea views and sunsets that slow everyone down. Gallipoli is lively, but it never loses its soul. It’s ideal for couples, slow travelers and anyone exploring southern Italy by car. Gallipoli is also perfect town for the base on your Puglia road trip, but check Ceglie Messapica and Ostuni if you want to explore Adriatic coast.
Two centers of Gallipoli Puglia you need to know about
Gallipoli Puglia has two distinct centers:
- Old Town (Centro Storico): historic island with narrow streets, sea views, restaurants, and sunset spots
- New Town: modern, practical area with easier car access, shops, and accommodation options
One important thing to understand when planning a Gallipoli Puglia: the town has two centers.
Old Town (Centro Storico)
The old town sits on a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge. This is the heart of Gallipoli — stone houses, churches, balconies above the sea, small piazzas, and endless sunset viewpoints.
Most of the romance, charm, and evening life you imagine when thinking about Gallipoli happens here.
New Town (City Center)
The new town spreads around the cathedral area and inland streets. This part is more modern, easier to access by car, and far more practical if you’re doing a road trip through Puglia.
Understanding this split is essential when deciding where to stay.

Where to stay in Gallipoli Puglia if you’re traveling by car
The best place to stay in Gallipoli Puglia if you have a car is near the old town but outside the restricted traffic zone, ideally with included parking. This allows easy walking access without parking stress.
If you’re planning a Gallipoli Puglia, parking should be one of your main criteria when booking accommodation.
What you need to know
- Most accommodations inside the old town are not accessible by car
- If you’re not a resident, you don’t have permission to enter the old town by car
- This makes luggage, parking and logistics more complicated
Best accommodation strategy
Look for a place:
- As close as possible to the old town
- With included or guaranteed parking
Why this matters on a road trip:
If you stay 2–3 km away from the old town, you’ll face two options every evening:
- Drive back and forth and search for parking, or
- Walk — which is pleasant towards the center, but tiring and uncomfortable on the way back due to the narrow incline
Staying close saves time, energy and stress.

Parking in Gallipoli Puglia: real advice for visitors by car
Parking in Gallipoli Puglia can be difficult during high season. The most reliable options are large paid lots near the old town entrance and seaside parking areas, but they fill up quickly.
Parking is one of the trickiest parts of a Gallipoli Puglia.
Main parking areas
- A large parking lot in front of the old town entrance
- A smaller parking lot in front of the castle
- Parking spaces along the seaside dock
Although it looks like there’s plenty of parking, these spots are full most of the day, especially in summer.
If you’re unlucky, you can easily lose 30–45 minutes driving around. Also, there’s parking in the streets all around the city, just look for the blue parking spaces (paid) or white one (free).
Paid parking tips
- Parking machines are everywhere
- You must enter your license plate number, choose duration and pay.
Tip: Machines often say they accept cards — but many don’t. Always carry coins.

Accomodation in Gallipoli, Puglia (best options if you’re traveling by car)
Choosing the right accommodation in Gallipoli Puglia can completely change your experience — especially if you’re on a road trip.
Based on the parking tips above, the golden rule is simple:
Stay as close as possible to the old town and always prioritize accommodation with parking.
Here are the best types of places to look for:
Hotels near the Old Town with parking
These are ideal if you want to walk into the old town in the evening without worrying about parking or driving back late at night. Look for hotels on the mainland side, right before the bridge to the old town. Here are my recommandations:
Biancodonda Greenblu Hotel & SPA
B&Bs and guesthouses in the New Town
Many small B&Bs in the new town offer private parking or reserved spaces. This option is often more affordable and very practical if you’re staying more than one night.
Apartments with included parking
If you prefer space and flexibility, apartments just outside the old town with included parking are a great choice — especially for couples or longer stays.
If you’re booking through platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb, always filter for “parking included” and double-check the exact location on the map.
A short look at Gallipoli’s history
The name Gallipoli comes from the Greek Kallípolis, meaning “beautiful city.”
Because of its strategic position, Gallipoli was ruled by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Spanish powers. The massive defensive walls once protected the town from pirate attacks.
Today, those same walls define the atmosphere of this unforgettable Gallipoli Puglia stop.
Walking along the fortifications at golden hour, it’s easy to imagine ancient ships approaching the harbor and merchants arriving from across the Mediterranean.
Gallipoli’s old town still preserves its original island layout, connected to the mainland by a historic bridge. Stone alleys, baroque churches, and sea-facing balconies create a unique blend of history and everyday life, making Gallipoli Puglia feel authentic rather than over-polished.
What to see & do in Gallipoli
- Walk the entire old town perimeter with sea views on all sides
- Visit the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, a masterpiece of southern Italian Baroque
- Get lost in the narrow streets of the old town
- Sit by the sea and slow down — Gallipoli rewards unplanned moments

A Christmas shop open all year
One of Gallipoli’s surprises is a Christmas shop open year-round, perfect for unique souvenirs that instantly bring you back to your Puglia road trip – even in winter.
Beaches in Gallipoli Puglia
The best beaches in Gallipoli Puglia are Baia Verde and the small city beach Spiaggia della Purita nestled inside the old town. Baia Verde offers both free beaches and lidos with sunbeds, while the old town beach is ideal for a quick swim. There are also great beaches near Gallipoli, so check day trips from this town.
One reason Gallipoli works so well on a Puglia road trip is how easily you can reach beaches by car.
Old Town Beach
There’s a small city beach next to the old town — perfect for a quick swim.
Baia Verde
Baia Verde is actually part of Gallipoli, not a separate destination.
Parking here can be confusing, similar to the city center. If you find a free parking space on the street, you will need to calculate for how long you’ll stay at the beach…so be sure to save this free parking lot behind Zeus Beach Bar, where you can leave your car all day.
Baia Verde alternates between:
- Free beach
- Beach bars (lidos)
This setup continues for several kilometers, so everyone can choose what they prefer. I personally loved Baia Verde and highly recommend it.

Nights in Gallipoli & the best sunset in Puglia
After a beach day on your Gallipoli Puglia, spend at least one evening in the old town.
Gallipoli offers, without exaggeration, the most beautiful sunset in Puglia. The sun drops directly into the Ionian Sea, the stone turns golden and the entire town slows down.
The best sunset bars in Gallipoli
Looking for the best sunset bars in Gallipoli? These spots offer the most beautiful sea views, perfect for aperitivo, dinner, or a relaxed summer evening.
Mivida Gallipoli
A stylish seaside lounge bar ideal for sunset aperitivo. Expect creative cocktails, relaxed music, and uninterrupted views of the Ionian Sea as the sun goes down.
Il Faro Restaurant
Located near the lighthouse, Il Faro is one of the best places for a sunset dinner in Gallipoli. It’s especially popular for seafood dishes paired with panoramic coastal views.
Santavè
Santavè is known for its laid-back vibe, sunset drinks, and direct sea access. A great choice if you want a casual atmosphere with golden-hour light reflecting off the water.
Where to eat in Gallipoli
Seafood lovers
Gallipoli is a seafood paradise, especially in the old town. There is one outstanding seafood restaurant – Navicula Mare – a place where you order what’s fresh and let the kitchen decide.
Fancy Dining
Pallazo Presta offers spectacular view from the rooftop. Here you’ll enjoy delicious bites and amazing cocktails. Be sure to reserve you spot for the night.
Burgers with a twist
If you’re craving something different on your road trip, Brasserie in the new town is ideal for fans of American-style food — burgers, chopped meat and fries.
I found it on TheFork app, where you can often get a discount. With my code (85145601) you’ll earn 20EUR discount for your first booking.
Day trips from Gallipoli Puglia by car
The best day trips from Gallipoli Puglia include Punta Prosciutto, Nardò, Porto Cesareo and Santa Maria di Leuca. All are easily reachable by car and perfect for combining beaches, towns and food experiences.
Gallipoli is an excellent base for short drives along the Ionian coast, but if you have few more extra days, stay in Lecce and make a day trip to Otranto.
Punta Prosciutto Beach
One of the best nearby beaches. Punta Prosciutto is that kind of the beach you see all over social media and you want to teleport yourself immediately. My favorite section is near Papagalo Beach Bar, with clear water and relaxed vibes. There’s also large free parking here.

Nardò & Cenate area
Stop in Nardò for breakfast and a walk through its elegant historic center. After that, take a scenic drive through the Cenate area, known for historic villas hidden among pine trees.

Porto Cesareo & dessert stop
End the day in Porto Cesareo for dinner — and dessert at this Quo Vadis Pasticciotteria, a magical place selling only pasticciotti, Puglia’s most famous dessert.
Take them to-go and enjoy them with a sunset over the Ionian Sea.

Santa Maria di Leuca
Another fantastic day trip from Gallipoli Puglia is Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost point of Salento where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet. Leuca is known for its dramatic coastline, lighthouse views and spectacular sea caves, which are best explored by boat. Instead of just walking around town, I highly recommend taking a boat cruise to the caves, where you’ll see hidden grottos, turquoise water, and rock formations only accessible from the sea.
I suggest booking a Santa Maria di Leuca boat tour with cave visits in advance – it’s an easy, well-organized experience and one of the most memorable ways to explore this part of Salento.
Santa Maria di Leuca makes a perfect full-day excursion from Gallipoli by car, especially if you want to combine coastal scenery, swimming stops, and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.
